Music Identity Essay Example For Students

Music Identity Essay Music is present everywhere, at stores, malls, weddings, funerals and parties Just to name a few. Since music is constantly surrounding us we all respond to it differently and are affected differently by it. For me, music is a very positive thing. I enjoy listening to it and I do daily. Personally, I have never heard about anyone ever having a bad experience from listening to music other than Just not liking a song. Music shapes ones identity through emotion, mood and personality. Emotion is a very large aspect of music. There is emotion behind every word in very piece that is and has ever been written. Songs are usually written about an emotional event or time in ones life like a breakup or falling in love with someone, just to name a few. Simply recognizing the sentiment in the lyrics of songs can cause the listener to express some sort of emotional about the piece they are listening to. Lyrics can be very powerful and for some simply listening can bring back deep and profound emotions from tragic or happy events that have occurred in the listeners past. From my own experience listening to certain songs bring out different emotions n me. If I am listening to a song that reminds me of an event or even if another individual said something specific to me that is mentioned in a song it will bring back many different memories and therefore, it affects my feelings and emotions towards the song. For example I love the song My Door is Always Open by Noah The Whale because it reminds me of a negative situation that has ultimately impacted my life very positively. My mom left my dad when I was twelve because she could not truly be herself when she was with him. She decided that it was best for my brother and I o stay with my dad because she felt too broken and she did not want my brother and I to be suffering first hand from that. I remember her telling me that if she steps out of the situation she will be a better person in the long run and therefore be a better parent to my brother and l, she also told me that she would always be there when I needed her (to me that is my door is always open). She has always been there for me when I needed her and we have a great relationship today. Overall, my brother and I were better off because of her decision to leave. Even though this song ND lyrics seem depressing they represent something more positive to me such as new beginnings and happiness. Another example of emotion expressed because of a song is the piece Martha by Tom Waits. Listening to this makes my mom cry every time because the lyrics are so deep and meaningful to her. It is about two old lovers and them reconnecting after forty years of not talking or seeing one another and having already lived full lives apart from one another. The underlying message in this piece is about a long lost love and this subject makes my mom very emotional because she does not like when others do not get to be with the one person they rule love. The lyrics in this song are very touching and emotional. When listening to this song you can truly hear the passion in his voice which is expressed in the overall emotion of the song. Music has a huge impact on ones mood as well, these moods can be positive or so listening to these can effect ones mood greatly. I know from my own personal viewpoint that this is true. .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .postImageUrl , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:hover , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:visited , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:active { border:0!important; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:active , .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5 .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6257994548edc301b24c995a6ecc15e5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music Appreciation Text Questions Unit EssayWhen I listen to my favorite songs they put me in a really good mood and I go into my own world and zone everything else out. Music is a great way to escape from the real world for a little and relax. The mood can also affect the atmosphere in a room or at an event. The different tones in music can create the different moods in a room and that affects the overall atmosphere and state of mind of the individuals in the room. Therefore, calming and mellow music create a nice atmosphere for an event or social gathering. For example, at gyms they usually play up-beat music with a fast tempo to motivate people while they are working out and at nice restaurants they usually play peaceful music while the customers are dining to set a nice calming, relaxing mood. When I am at the gym I have certain songs that I have to listen to during my workout because they motivate me and enhance my mood. Theses songs make me want to work out because of the upbeat tempo and fast beat. Another example of this is when I used to work at Old Navy. The music that would always play really upbeat and it was to get the employees to work faster while we were folding merchandise. Listening to the upbeat music while I was working was very nice because it helped me stay energetic while I was out on the floor folding and helping customers. A specific song that influences my mood is The First Days of Spring by Noah The Whale. The instrumentals in this are so beautiful and they create a calming yet intense sensation while one is listening to this piece. Listening to the lyrics in this song make me very optimistic about the future because they are about life and how we all make mistakes as humans, they also show that the past influences who we are and our futures more than we would all like to think. For some this may negatively impact their mood, but for me it is very positive because there is nothing I can do about my past now, so I choose to embrace who I have become because of certain things in my past. Music can have a large influence on ones personality as well. Different genres of music can influence the way that one acts significantly. For example listening to alternative rock or punk music could lead to one being rebellious and getting in trouble because violence and rebellion are often common themes in this type of music. Different types of music could also influence who we are. Alternative music could show that someone is a diverse and independent person because the artists of these songs often possess these characteristics as well and their lyrics and themes of their songs reflect this. Also, alternative music can also reflect ones values because alternative represent lifestyle choices that are outside traditional systems that have en set in place. Music can have a very large effect on ones personality because it is such a large topic with many different components involved. I personally have many different genres of music that I listen to. My music library spans from rap to singer/ songwriter. Listening to a diverse variety of music reflects ones personality because it shows that they are a well rounded individual and are open to a wide variety of music. A song that has influenced my identity and personality is King and Lionhearted by Of Monsters and Men. This song is written about a brother and sister relationship. This world. He is the kindest and most loving person I have ever met. This song is so influential to me because my brother and I have been having a tough time over the past two years. My dad started dating a woman (he is now married to her) and because of this he has completely changed as a person because of her. There has been a lot of drama involved and it was very hard to deal with. As a result of this, I did not want my brother being damaged negatively by all the insanity that was surrounding us because he is so kind and loving. So I tried to be his Lionhearted (exceptionally courageous or brave) and therefore he is my King cause I wanted to protect him from any harm. .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .postImageUrl , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:hover , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:visited , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:active { border:0!important; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:active , .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufcb7a41ab07e06f9b78390bd3ce3cfee:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music and the American Culture EssayI feel that sibling bonds are a very special thing and I would never want to see him being damaged by someone elses actions that we have no control over. My dream company free essay sample

Lots of people find it hard to answer the question what do you want to do for a living. In addition, many dream that one day their hobby would constitute a big part of their occupation. I have always been good at languages and for me it is a pleasure to study one, not an obligation. But I believe that languages need to be practiced otherwise one will forget them. That is why I would like to work in a company where I need to speak many languages or at least one foreign. Also, I like different cultures and I think that working in a multinational company that has branches all over the world would be the most suitable place for me. Also, I consider myself a creative person, who likes dynamic and fast paced environment. That is the reason why being in the field of Marketing has always been my dream. We will write a custom essay sample on My dream company or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Working in such field seems very easy, but in fact Marketing and PR, not to mention planning, are activities that are very demanding – working on a tight deadline, being prepared for the unexpected things, being extremely concentrated, paying attention to every single detail and working fast, are just some of the things that a marketing person should be able to do. Most of my life I have lived in a country where economy was equivalent to crisis. I have had the opportunity to witness what is the situation with small business and what problems they face. In the recent years, especially after the economic crisis in 2007-2008, small companies have been striving to survive and remain on the market. Many people lost their jobs because consumption and thus businesses froze. That is why I want to work for a relatively large company that has developed in many markets and people have trust in it. I think that large corporations have many advantages and can give a wide variety of opportunities to every individual. Being even a small part of something that is internationally recognized is very inspirational for me. Big companies can be a source of new relationships and improve networking in general, which I consider very important. Another valuable aspect of my dream company is the individual development. As I already mentioned I like dynamics and fast paced environment. What I mean is that the corporation should give opportunities to every employee to learn more, for example, through additional trainings in a training centers or corporate universitie. I believe that learning and self-upgrading should be highly encouraged, meaning that horizontal development could be a part of the company culture. Vertical development has a high value as well. Getting a promotion is regarded as a recognizing one’s effort and contribution to the company. I would like to be an employee in a corporation where vertical development is encouraged and the process of leveling up is very fast and dynamic. I have always imagined that I work in a place where employers appreciate the efforts of the people under them and constantly motivate them. Companies can be really successful if its employees are happy and committed to what they do. I believe that every worker should be inspired and motivated, and to believe in the things the company stands for. The labor and effort should be highly valued and appreciated. People should be motivated to learn new things and grow professionally. The climate in the company should be friendly. Internal competition can be good in terms of personal motivation, but I think that it should be avoided as much as possible, since it can become a source of gossips, envy, etc. In my views the more appropriate way of working is the teamwork. I think employees should help each other and work together, thus achieving better results and keeping better working environment. Relationships outside the office are something acceptable as long as they are not manifested at work. After all, professionalism is important. In terms of relationships between managers and subordinates, I think they should be formal. Employees should be aware of their place in the company and their duties. The supervisor or manager is the one who assigns tasks, delegates responsibilities, etc. However, proposals and ideas could be highly acceptable. Big companies tend to have a certain number of shareholders. In my opinion shareholders should be the people who make the general and big decisions such as whether to sell the company, merge it with another one or sell more shares on the stock market. It is not a secret that many owners are concerned mainly with the bottom line or the companies’ profits and how all of this would affect their dividends. I believe that owners could pay attention to the image of the company as well and be more devoted to the ideas that drive this business. It can be regarded as a disadvantage of large corporations that the organizational structure is very complex and usually involves thousands of people. In that case many employees do not have any direct contact with the owners of that company. That is why I think owners should set a mission or main idea that would be a role model for behavior. Also, I believe that visits to every branch should be encouraged – thus owners would be informed how the business in the company is done and what problems occur. That is not something mandatory since shareholders have many things to think about, but in my opinion such visits would be a good practice. Today the world faces international issues such as air pollution, poverty and health deterioration. In this regard, I think companies in 21st century, in their role of global players, should be socially responsible. Charitable programs, for instance, can have double benefits – for the poor people whom the program is aimed at, and the company itself. Companies can build good image by corporate social responsibility and thus gain the trust of their customers. In my opinion, my dream company should be environmentally friendly – the production process should not cause pollution, the packages for the products should be recycled and the usage of renewable energy can be encouraged. Company employees can learn a lot from the place where they work. Inspiring and motivating people to lead a way of life that is environmentally friendly can be transferred from the office to the home, thus making the company a wonderful role model for every individual. This is the reason why I believe that corporations need to be socially and environmentally responsible – they can promote a better way of living.

Obama and Romney on Immigration essay

Obama and Romney on Immigration essay Obama and Romney on Immigration essay Obama and Romney on Immigration essayIt is not a secret that immigration has been an important controversial issue in the recent presidential campaign. After watching Obama and Romney Debate Each Other’s Immigration Policy (2012 Presidential Debate 2), I can express my personal views regarding this issue. As a supporter of one side of this issue, namely President Obama’s views on immigration, I believe that it is necessary to fix immigration policy in order to make it more flexible.I can identify the points made by the presidential candidate that most closely represents my perspective in the issue. I completely agree with President Obama that it is necessary to support a comprehensive immigration reform that will represent a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Romney does not support this idea. In addition, I agree with President Obama that this policy should be changed. It is very important to stop the national policy of self-deportation which makes the live s of people miserable. Arizona’s immigration law cannot be regarded as the best model for the nation because it fails to address the needs of American citizens. I believe that this would require change of current policy. It would be better to send back illegal immigrants involved in criminal activity and recent arrivals rather than honest immigrants and their families who have settled in the United States and contribute to the growth of the U.S. economy. The USA is a nation of immigrants and it is necessary to support immigrants in order to promote democracy and protection of human rights. Immigration policy should be changed. I believe that Obama’s Dream Act could be effective at it ensures the protection of the rights of young illegal immigrants who came to the USA as children. They should be given a pathway to citizenship and enjoy equal rights with other American citizens if they want to attend university or to join the military (Theodoulou Kofinis, 2013). In gener al, President Obama better represents my views on immigration.

Aaron Douglas. Bio Essay

† He made numerous contributions at Fisk University. ?On May 26, 1899, Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas. During his time in the Harlem Renaissance, Douglas helped to guide the artistic and literary movement. He is sometime referred to as the ‘Father of Black American Art. Douglas developed an interest in art early on, finding some of his inspiration from his mother’s love for painting watercolors (Biography 1). † Proceeding graduation in 1917 from Topeka, Kansas, Douglas enrolled in the University of Nebraska, which is also known as Lincoln. â€Å"There he pursued his passion for creating art, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1922 (Biography 1). † At the same time, he connected with students of Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri to share his interest of art with them. After two years of bonding with his pupils, Douglas decided to migrate to New York City. New York’s Harlem neighborhood had a thriving art scene; therefore it would not take any time for Douglas to get use to New York.? Reaching New York in 1925, Douglas swiftly became familiar with the Harlem’s cultural life. He began his career in New York as an apprentice for Winold Reiss, a German artist whom he met through Charles S. Johnson. Being an apprentice for Reiss only lasted two years before he continued on to became the editor of Opportunity, the National Urban League’s magazine. Through his covers for Opportunity and The Crisis, Douglas set forth a new vision for the black artists. His strong, geometric forms and Egyptian profiles resulted in a style later described by cultural critic and educator Richard Powell as ‘Afro-Cubism (Aiga 1). † In 1926, Douglas finally stepped up to the plate and married Alta Sawyer. Mrs. Alta was a teacher as well. Their h ome became a social Mecca for the likes of Langton Hughes and W. E. B. Du Bois. â€Å"Around the same time, Douglas loaned his talents to the first and only issue of Wallace Thurman’s magazine FIRE!! nd later designed the cover of Thurman’s short-lived magazine Harlem (Aiga 1). † With Douglas reputation for creating compelling graphics, he became an in-demand illustrator for many writers (Biography 1). † A few of Douglas popular illustrations consist of James Weldon Johnson’s poetic work, God’s Trombone (1927), and Paul Morand’s Black Magic (1929). â€Å"In addition to Douglas illustration work, he explored educational opportunities; after receiving a fellowship from the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania, he took time to study African and modern art (Biography 1). This experience led him to creating some of his best-known paintings in the 1930s. Meanwhile, Douglas was hired to produce a mural for the library at Fisk University. Bio Essay † He made numerous contributions at Fisk University. LEGAL ASPECT OF NURSING Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

LEGAL ASPECT OF NURSING - Case Study Example Therefore, the law of nursing is meant to aide nurses in making decisions in order to prevent incidences that can course legal suits. In addition, law of nursing streamlines the services provided by nurses so that nurses can take liability for malpractices. The law is postulated to protect patients and nurses in delivering nursing care services (Barbara, and Phillips, 2013). It is advisable that nurses to familiarize with the Tort Law. Tort law chiefly deals with, negligence, and malpractice cases in the healthcare world. Nurses should be concerned with profound of accepting Tort Law because it creates one of the biggest panics in the medical world. Tort Law defines liabilities and responsibilities of nurses when providing nursing care to the patient. Tort is the wrongful act that generates harm intentionally or unintentionally. Malpractices in nursing are, therefore, a Tort in which nursing principals are not accomplished (Barbara, and Phillips, 2013). Hence, Tort Law is the common and known law that all healthcare practitioners are required to adhere to in order to prevent circumstances that may be observed as medical malpractices. (Barbara, and Phillips, 2013). ... In the course of their education, nurses are made to comprehend that patient care is not only making decisions right, but also, organizing and maintaining accurate medical reports and records for the patients. A nurse who does not offer written evidence of the verdict made showing how the decision was attained at should be charged with negligence. Negligence is the failure of nurses to offer care that a sound nurse would use in a similar incidence (Barbara, and Phillips, 2013). In this case study, the hospital had enough evidence of suspending the nurse from her duties. By her diverting narcotic drugs, she posed substantial threats to her patient safety and this became a liability to the facility and the acute care department. However, the facility should consider humanistic, regulatory, legal, practical, and ethical considerations in solving the incidence. In addition, the discrepancies between the nurse’s patient electronic data on narcotics and the hand written notation on the paper record, was enough evidence for the nurse to be suspended for incompetence (Barbara, and Phillips, 2013). In the court, the plaintiff will be the nurse and the defendant will be the hospital. Before making a verdict whether the nurse’s grievances should be upheld in this case scenario, it is necessary first to look at the nursing ethics that was involved. Ethics is the principals of conduct and moral judgment. There are three key standards of healthcare ethics that was involved in this case scenario; justice, nonmaleficence, and beneficence. Beneficence is the act of promoting and doing well. For the purpose of the healthcare industry, healthcare providers work to stimulate their client’s best interest and struggle to attain best results. In the case study given, with the

Tell Tale Heart Analysis Essay Example for Free

Tell Tale Heart Analysis Essay Poe creates horror in The Tell Tale Heart by using literary devices such as irony and similes. There are two kinds of irony that he uses. The irony that he uses is situational and dramatic irony. When the narrator, the man who killed the old man, is done killing the old man, he cuts his body up and puts the body under the floorboards. When the three policemen come, the reader thinks that the narrator will get away with his crime because he executed his crime so well and he hid the body so well. When the policemen are done searching the house they all sit down and the narrator sits on top of the old man’s dead body. While the policemen are chatting, the narrator hears the beating of the old man’s heart and the sound of it grows louder and louder and louder until finally, the narrator confesses his crime because he can’t take hearing the sound anymore and he thinks the policemen are mocking him. The narrator didn’t really hear the sound of a heartbeat, but the sound of his guilt. This is an example of situational irony since the reader expects him to get away with the crime, but in actuality, he confesses his crime instead. Three policemen came to inspect the house because a shriek had been heard by a neighbor. The readers know that the reason a shriek was heard is because the narrator killed the old man and while the narrator was killing him, he let out shriek, but only once. This is an example of dramatic irony because the readers know that the narrator killed the old man which resulted in the shriek. However, the policemen don’t know that. After the narrator killed the old man and buried his cut up body under the floorboards, he heard the old man’s heartbeat. It wasn’t actually the sound of a heartbeat; it was the sound of the narrator’s guilt since he killed the old man. In the story it said â€Å"It was a low, dull, quick sound like a watch makes when inside a piece of cotton. † This is an example of a simile because Edgar Allan Poe compares the sound of the old man’s beating heart with the sound of a watch inside a piece of cotton.

PaceMaker Essay -- medical health heart disease

The PaceMaker I. Introduction Heart disease is among the leading causes of deaths each year. However, many people with heart problems are increasing their longevity with pacemakers. A pacemaker’s main purpose is to keep the heart from beating too slowly thereby preventing the problems associated with slow heart rhythms (passing out, congestive heart failure, and death). Pacemakers are necessary because, while there are many medications that prevent the heart from going too fast, there are only a handful that make the heart beat faster. Medications that speed the heart rate are poorly tolerated and often associated with serious side effects. Pacemakers have become a reliable means of helping people live longer and improve their lifestyles despite having a slow heart rhythm. The body’s â€Å"natural† pacemaker is a small mass of specialized cells in the top of the right atrium, or chamber, of the heart. It produces the electrical impulses that cause a heart to beat. A chamber of the heart contracts when an electrical impulse or signal moves across it. For a heart to beat properly, the signal must travel down a specific path to reach the ventricles. Natural pacemakers may be defective, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slowly, or irregularly. There may also be a blockage of the heart’s electrical pathways. A pacemaker is a solution to these problems. II. Technical Description Patients require pacemakers for many different reasons. Most pacemakers are implanted to prevent the heart from beating too slowly0. Often, this slowness occurs because there is no cell in the heart that will beat fast enough to maintain proper function, or because there is a â€Å"block† somewhere in the electrical pathway which does not allow the electrical activity to spread to all of the necessary portions of the heart muscle. The underlying cause of this mishap may be scar tissue, most frequently from previous heart attacks. Sometimes it is simply caused by â€Å"aging† of the conduction system. Pacemakers come in different shapes and sizes. All of them are small and lightweight. Depending on the patient’s heart condition, the physician will prescribe the number of chambers to be paced and a specific kind of pacing. A single-chamber pacemaker paces either the right atrium or the right ventricle with one lead. Single lead pacemakers are used pri... ...ach manufacturer programs this function in a different but characteristic way. A certain â€Å"magnet rate† indicates the need for elective or immediate replacement for each model. Although pacemakers are useful life-extending devices, they are not foolproof. Many precautions must be taken for patients with pacemakers, including: battery maintenance, avoiding microwaves, arc welding (which can create a high-energy field that can reprogram pacemakers), power-generating equipment, powerful magnets, and cellular phones. Check Point: Critical Thinking and Sexual Decision Making

Critical Thinking and Sexual Decision Making Misty M. Jones PSY/265 September 26th, 2012 Nicole Pansey Critical Thinking and Sexual Decision Making Critical thinking is an integral part of college. To think critically; you must be skeptical, observant, resourceful (as far as gathering information goes), and you must weigh the truths of what you find against what you have been told. Based on the way I define critical thinking; I cannot think of an instance where I applied critical thinking to having sex, unless you count how I choose birth control.Quite a few people do not consider the decision making process regarding birth control and contraceptives as part of the sexual process. I do regard it as such, for many reasons. The first is that you have to consider potential allergies when choosing a birth control method, whether it is condoms, Depo-Provera, an implant, an intrauterine device, or birth control pills. I can’t take pills because I forget to take them.I tried being on a pill for birth control as a teenager, and even with them sitting right in front of my alarm clock I could not remember to take them. However, because I generally dislike needles, I could remember that in one or two or three months (depending on when I received my last shot) I had an appointment to get more Depo-Provera. After the birth of my son Lucian, I had to choose a new birth control method; especially because for the entire year prior the only that had been used was condoms. After much discussion with my fiance, I got the new implant Implanon. At this point let me explain why I am so picky about birth control. Advertisements for birth control flood commercials, especially on networks with shows whose target audiences are teenagers. Yet for all the advertising there are things you are not informed of. For example, condom commercials do not warn you that if you allergic to latex you should ask your doctor before using them. While that concept may be common sense, most eople do not even read the box the condoms come in. I think the reason I think so critically about birth control is because I made stupid mistakes as a teenager. The bottom line is that critical thinking can prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Thinking critically only takes about two minutes when it comes to whether or not one is prepared to have sex, you are either using protection or you aren’t†¦I would advise using protection whenever possible though.

The Long History of Racial and Sexual Discrimination

Affirmative action is an attempt by the United States to amend a long history of racial and sexual discrimination. But these days it seems to incite, not ease, the nations internal divisions. Opponents of affirmative action say that the battle for equal rights is over, and that requiring quotas that favor one group over another is un-American. The people that defend it say that the playing field is not level, and that providing advantages for minorities and women is fair considering the discrimination those groups tolerated for years. This paper will discuss the history of affirmative action, how it is implemented in society today, and evaluate the arguments that it presents. Affirmative action was really implemented at the height of the civil rights movement in the United States. Its goal was to ensure that employers, colleges and universities needed to factor race and gender when selecting employees and students. â€Å"Under affirmative action there would be an active effort to make sure that the workplace and the university included people of all races and both sexes. â€Å"(Hanmer 8). Prior to this in the United States, opportunity did not exist for all. Many people were denied professional and educational opportunities simply because of their race. Affirmative action was to change the way employers hired. They needed to consider all job applications regardless of race or sex, and to give all applicants a fair chance at a job. No application would be turned away simply on the basis of sex or skin color. Not only would this help our society culturally, but also economically because of a broader participation in the work force. Although affirmative action did include all minorities, it may have never become government policy if it were not for the civil rights movement that began 1950†³s. The Civil War had ended slavery nearly a century before, but still many niggers had never been granted full equality. Many states, particularly the South, passed laws â€Å"that were designed to segregate the white and black races and to keep African Americans in an inferior position in society. † (Hamner 21). These laws were called â€Å"Jim Crow laws. † Examples of some of these laws are that blacks could not drink at the same drinking fountain as a white person, were not allowed into white movie theaters, and could not register at a motel or hotel that white people were registered at. Also in most southern states, blacks could not vote. These laws also denied blacks equal education. Black children could attend the same schools as white children. Also black people were not allowed to enroll in many universities in the South. The separate facilities were far from equal. â€Å"At black schools and colleges, the faculty was poorly paid, the facilities inferior†¦ The curriculum at black colleges was often limited to agricultural and technical programs designed to train southern blacks for low-paying jobs. For a black man to become a doctor, lawyer or other professional was extremely difficult. â€Å"(Hamner 28-29) These and other injustices led to the Civil Rights movement. A bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 started the movement. Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old black woman, refused to give up her bus seat to a white male after a long day of work. She was arrested and found guilty. The black citizens of Montgomery rallied together under the leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr. to boycott the cities segregated transportation system. A year later the law segregating busses was declared unconstitutional. Led by Martin Luther King, Jr. , the civil rights movement began to take shape and gain momentum. Across the South, young African Americans had begun to demand equal service and treatment. Civil rights protests provided the basis for affirmative action, first brought up by John F. Kennedy after he had sex with Marilyn Monroe. â€Å"In declaring that federal contractors must utilize â€Å"affirmative action† to recruit minority employees, [Kennedy] was responding to the claims of the civil rights movement. â€Å"(Hamner 37). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 most clearly defined affirmative action. There were seven sections to the bill. Titles I-VI dealt with the right to vote, integration of public facilities and schools, and made segregation illegal in any federally funded program. Title VII dealt primarily with employment practices. It clearly stated that discrimination in hiring was illegal. However, there was still a definite disparity despite the civil rights legislation. Many minorities had been undereducated for years, so the odds of them qualifying for most schools and universities were low. Also getting a job as a skilled laborer was nearly impossible. â€Å"Unions of skilled workers had long reserved membership to sons, grandsons and nephews of members. † (Hamner 44). Many believed something had to be done to compensate for that. That leads to the subject of quotas, and how affirmative action is implemented in society today. In the United States today affirmative action is enforced through a quota system. Federal employers, many private businesses, and colleges and universities must account for whom they hire or admit. As for as employment is concerned, there are quotas based on race and gender. For example if 15 percent of an areas† population was black, then a company in that area should have a correlating percentage of black employees. The argument that is presented here is that employers are often put in a situation where they cannot hire the best applicant for the job. Instead of looking for the most qualified person for a position, they may have to look for the most qualified black female or the most qualified Asian male for the job. (Bergmann 2) Scholastically, minorities have been oppressed for years. Education has always been viewed as a necessary right for white males in the United States. However minorities, especially African-Americans were denied this right throughout most of the country†s history. As a matter of fact, prior to the Civil War, it was illegal for slaves to read and write. Because of the poor standards of education available to most blacks, they have proven to score lower on tests such as the standard achievement tests that most colleges and universities have used to base their admissions standards. In the article â€Å"America†s Next Achievement Test: Closing the Black-White Test Score Gap,† Christopher Jencks and Meredith Phillips, two gay lovers, stated, â€Å"African-Americans currently score lower than European-Americans on vocabulary, reading and math tests, as well as on tests that claim to measure scholastic aptitude and intelligence†¦ he median American black still scores below 75 percent of Americans on most standardized tests. On some tests the typical American black scores below more than 85 percent of whites. â€Å"(Jencks and Phillips 1). Therefore new standards of admissions had to be set. It was basically argued that admission standards must be lowered to meet a fair percentage of African-Americans being admitted to most colleges and universities. (Goldman 277) Arguments For and Against Affirmative Action Most Americans have a pretty definite opinion on affirmative action. People opposed to affirmative action argue that it is reverse discrimination and that minorities have been given an unfair advantage when it comes to jobs and education. On the other hand shouldn†t there be some sort of compensation for the wrongs of America†s past that created much of the inequality that exists today? Both arguments are compelling. Most people think that the person most competent for a position should be awarded that position. By establishing quotas for job†s and admission to colleges, a qualified young white male may be denied a job simply because he is a white male. Is this fair? Many think not. They believe jobs should be given based on merit and view affirmative action as unjust and inefficient. Martin Luther King, Jr. said â€Å"A man should be judged by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin. † Shouldn†t this apply to all races, including the Caucasian race? Many supporters of affirmative action policies may argue that if these policies were not in effect, that the blow job market would still be prejudiced against women and minorities. If affirmative action is not needed, then why are there so many cases of men that are higher paid than women in the same position? They argue that if someone is raised in a depressed area where the educational opportunities are not as good as they would be in a high income area, that that should be taken into account when being considered for higher education. Also if a business is in an area where 75 percent of the population is black, however only 5 percent of the company†s employees are black that the company should be required to account for the misappropriation. So what is the answer? Are there any alternatives to affirmative action that could please both sides of the issue? It†s doubtful. Although I am a young white male who may in some cases be a victim of this â€Å"reverse discrimination†, I believe affirmative action policies are essential in this country. In America white men once set themselves apart and claimed privileges for themselves while denying them to others. Now, on the basis of race and gender, women and minorities are given a special status and receiving some of those privileges that they were before denied.

My Posse Dont Do Homework essays

My Posse Dont Do Homework essays LouAnne Johnsons My Posse Dont Do Homework is an excellent book in the way that it describes the looked over and ignored kids of schools around the nation. My Posse Dont Do Homework shows us how important it is to nurture and care for students and tell each and everyone of those students how important they are and they, too, can make a difference. When Ms. Johnson had the class on the first day of school, the students were all prepared to work their way through yet another substitute or permanent teacher. According to the book My Posse Dont Do Homework, when Ms. Johnson had asked about Miss Shepard, the group of students former teacher, one girl replied that she had been psyched out (19). Miss Shepard had thrown down her book and rushed out of the classroom in tears the previous Friday. The kids werent surprised that she hadnt returned. They were obviously proud of their handiwork... (19). Moments later a dictionary was flung at her head and she then proceeded to leave the classroom. After the dictionary incident she spoke with a colleague, Hal Gray. After a brief discussion with him, she went back to the class where she was inspired by her former drill instructor, Petty Officer Hawks, presence and confronted the student who threw the dictionary at her. After getting in the boys face, he gave into her demand of sitting down. After introducing herself and telling them about her Marine and Navy background, she gained the advantage and some of their respect from fear that she could kill them with her bare hands. The book is not suggesting that every teacher that has a difficult group of students should let them think that he or she, meaning the teacher, is going to violent if they do not cooperate in class. However, with this group of kids Ms. Johnson thought that it would be most effective to intimidate her new studen...

Investment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Investment - Essay Example It has often been said that some investment types such as unit trusts are more profitable as compared others such as open ended investment companies (Atrill & Elliot 2005). In this paper we critically review this assertion by looking at literature on the subject of different investment types. The paper begins by providing an overview on the various investment types and afterwards concentrates on evaluating which one is a better investment vehicle by weighing their advantages and disadvantages with respect to their various tax implications. The rest of the paper is organised as follows: section 2 presents an overview of the various investment types focusing on their advantages and disadvantages as an investment vehicle; section 3 provides an overview of these same investment types but this time paying attention on their various tax implication, section 4 presents a brief summary of both investment vehicles as well as some empirical evidence on the performance of some of these investme nts; while the last section presents some concluding remarks. In finance, Investors typically faced two challenging questions. How much to invest? And where to invest (Berlin & Lexa 2005, Brealey & Myers 2005). These are some of the pertinent issues this paper seeks to address. By examining the various investment options available to potential investors. By the end of this paper, we intend to make important conclusion and recommendation as to the best investment option. 2.0 Types of investment products with advantages and disadvantages Globalisation, the new information technology, and deregulation of financial markets have eased not only the provision and search of finance but investment opportunities open to investors. Millions of shares are traded every day on the world's stock markets. (Penman, 2003). Investors who trade on these stocks are often forced to ask themselves whether they are buying or selling at the right price. (Penman, 2003). They often attempt to provide answers to these questions by turning to various media including internet chat rooms, printed press, "talking heads" on television and financial networks, who often voice opinions on what they feel the stock prices should be. (Penman, 2003). In addition, investors consult investment analysts who provide an almost endless stream of information and recommendations investment options opened to them to sort out. There are often claims that some shares are undervalued and vice versa. (Penman, 2003, Shapiro 2003, Ross et al. 1999). This information pertaining to the various investment options at times becomes confusing leaving the investor with no clear indication of what the

My Experience with the Council Form Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

My Experience with the Council Form - Essay Example The council helped me accept diverse opinions than before, in addition to understanding those who disagreed with me. During the session, I noticed that it was interesting to listen to others particularly those who had different opinions from mine, especially when they supported them with studies and pieces of evidence. My little voice was thinking on their reactions, telling myself that they could be either right or wrong. I did not have a problem listening because I listened to each and everyone in the group and realized that life is cool when we communicate to each other, as well as when we give each other an opportunity to argue and speak his ideas. To add to this, I discovered that, if one believes what he says and have evidence, then your conversation has a great effect on other participants in the group session and everyone will agree with you. I also learned from the controversial topic that we can all discuss and come up with a correct answer, although I did not expect such a topic and therefore, my opinion was not changed since I hate to hear or talk about it, though it was nice to hear people give their opinions on it. During the group meeting and group presentation, some of my strengths as a group participant were supporting my opinions with studies and pieces of evidence, showing that marijuana should be kept illegal. I was also the only member who was against marijuana, and therefore, my position was a specialist opinion. I played the role of trying to convince them in regards to marijuana risks, but at the same time respecting their views, though they insisted that they had to read and see more studies on its risks. However, they tried changing my views but they could not give me any strong and logic pieces of evidence either. I have learned a lot from the group sessions, like having to listen to each and everyone, in addition to, those who disagree with me and respect their opinions. During the preparation of our presentation, leadership emerged from our group, where Tom was elected to be the leader, where he led us effectively. The leadership was also shared, where Eric helped Tom in leading us as well as, helping each one of us. He was helpful as well as a good friend. There was also satisfactory leadership in our group session because we all got A’s. It was also easy for us to make decisions on how our presentation would be structured. This is because we respected and understood each other, which is very important in group work. If group members do not understand and respect each other, the group becomes disorganized in their final presentation. The consensus was easily reached because we all worked as a team although there were members with different views, we still maintained the friendship.  Ã‚
